Standing nude with stockings

Leo Gestel (Woerden 1881-1941 Hilversum)

Charcoal and pastel on buff paper 127.7 x 69.5 cm (50.3 x 27.4 in.) Signed and dated ´LEO GESTEL 11´ 1911

When Leo Gestel first presented his provocative nudes in 1911, the Amsterdam art world was in shock. Like his contemporary Egon Schiele, Gestel´s nude has a subdued erotic connotation while being radically cropped. The life-size fearless depiction of the model is rendered on the paper with unflinching confidence. Without support or visible context but with economical use of saturated colors, this Standing nude with stockings is a drastic modernist departure from the prevalent academic style at the time.
