Wood, paint and vegetal fiber 87.6 x 35.6 x 15.2 cm (34.5 x 14 x 6 in.) Likely Goodnews Bay, Southwest Alaska - circa 1890-1910

Joseph E. Chilberg traveled to Alaska for the gold rush, and over a period of approximately 20 years, amassed a large and significant collection of Eskimo art and artifacts. In 1917 Chilberg established Chilberg’s Alaska Museum of Arctic Antiquity and Curio Emporium in Long Beach, California, which remained in operation until 1935.

This mask was collected in Alaska in the late 19th century by Joseph E. Chilberg; The artist Roberto Matta, by descent to his son, Ramuntcho Matta, Paris, France
