Le costellazioni, a covered urn

Guido Balsamo Stella

(Torino, 1882 - Asolo, 1941)
Blown glass 49.5 x 17.5 cm (19.5 x 6.9 in.) Engraved 'Balsamo' and 'SALIR murano' Murano, Venice - 1925 (vessel) and 1928 (engraved decoration)

A representative of the Italian Art Deco period, both by form and decoration, only very few of these pieces were ever produced. The intrinsic engraving of the decoration, as well as the complexity of Balsamo-Stella’s vase model made this object very unsuitable for a commercial output, and therefor only produced to order. In 1936, SAIAR-Ferro Toso merged with the Vetreria Artistica Barovier & C. (in liquidation since 1932) and the Vetreria Barovier (in liquidation since 1936) to become the Ferro Toso Barovier-Vetrerie Artistiche Riunite, and the original SAIAR catalogue with Balsamo-stella’s models was discontinued. Up till the present day, only two of these vases -including this one- have been offered on the market.
