This inkstand by Gregorius van der Toorn is the largest known Dutch silver set of its kind made in the eighteenth century. The tray and the candleholder are engraved with the arms of alliance of the Van Alphen- de Ruever family. Isaac van Alphen was a seaman in the service of the Dutch East India Company, he also was burgomaster of Rotterdam no fewer than four times and he held an impressive number of other posts.
