Carl Milles (1875-1955) designed "Angel" for the roof of the Woodland Chapel at the Woodland Cemetery outside Stockholm. The chapel, today a Unesco World Heritage Site, was designed by Gunnar Asplund between 1918-1920 and was inaugurated in 1920. Milles conceived the Angel in 1921 for the roof portico above the entrance as the chapel’s only decoration.
