Frantisek Drtikol

(Pribram, 1883 - Prague, 1961)
Pigment print 22 x 29.5 cm (8.6 x 11.6 in.) Stamped on the lower right 'Copyright Drtikol Prague', signed and dated '1925' in pencil on the mount, signed again 'F. Drtikol' by the artist in ink on the verso, inscription also includes an address in Prague and mentions 'Pigment' and 'Studie' Prague, Czech Republic - 1925

While it was exhibited in Paris, a number of young photographers who would become important artists in their own right had the opportunity to study and admire Drtikol’s work. The artist and photographer Man Ray seems to have been particularly moved by 'Cactus' as his own mythic work 'Noire et Blanche', created the following year in 1926, appears

to have been heavily influenced by the composition of Drtikol’s photograph.

Only one other print of this photograph is known - it is conserved in The Decoratif Museum of Prague.
