Additional Information

“Dr. Annegret Hoberg, Kubin-Archive, Städtische Galerie im Lenbachhaus, Munich, has confirmed the authenticity of this work.

For only a short period, Alfred Kubin concentrated his artistic attention on painting, but never, in this span of life that lasted from 1904 to 1907/08, ever left the graphic image carrier paper or cardboard, as far as is known. In this composition, created in gouache technique on the image carrier preferred by the artist, the so-called cadastral paper, Kubin deals with an oriental scene. In a dim light, a horseman with a turban, wrapped in a blanket, appears on a camel. The blanket and the headstall on which he leads the camel, are accentuated in color using red paint. The landscape in the background shimmers in contrast to this mysteriously greenish.

After Alfred Kubin achieved sudden artistic fame with his ”“Hans von Weber”“ portfolio, and married in 1904, the artist sought a new form of expression. With Koloman Moser in Vienna, he learned the technique and began to experiment in Kleisterfarbenmalerei (painting in couloured paste).”
