TEFAF Talks are interactive panel discussions to strengthen one’s art knowledge. Pairing with leading content partners to share knowledge and expertise.

Art fairs played a dominant role in the market for decades but were forced to shut their doors when the Covid-19 pandemic struck. Now that the fairs are back, and collectors and dealers have the opportunity to reassess the place of fairs, a panel of art world professionals discuss what have we learned along the way and what could follow. During TEFAF New York 2022 we look back at the past months to review and discuss what’s ahead for the future of art fairs.

Melanie Gerlis, Financial Times

Melanie Gerlis became the weekly art market columnist for the Financial Times in 2016 and was previously Art Market Editor for The Art Newspaper, reporting on auctions, art fairs and market news globally since 2007. Before entering the art world, she worked for ten years at Finsbury, a communications and investor relations firm in London. Melanie’s book, ‘Art as an Investment?’, was published 2014 and her latest book ‘The Art Fair Story: A Rollercoaster Ride’ was published in December 2021 (Lund Humphries).

Anthony Meier, Art Dealers Association of America

Anthony Meier has been a veteran of the art world for 35 years. He is presently President of the Art Dealers Association of America and Vice President of the board of Chinati in Marfa Texas.

Frances Beatty, Beatty Adler

A native New Yorker, Frances Beatty majored in art history at Vassar College and received her PhD in Art History from Columbia University. She wrote her dissertation on Surrealist Imagery in Painting and Poetry in 1920s France. While working on her PhD, she wrote art criticism and taught Art History at Columbia University and Ramapo College. After working with the legendary Surrealist dealer and collector Julien Levy, Frances joined Richard L. Feigen & Co. in 1980 as Vice President and later President. Over her thirty-six years at Feigen, she curated numerous exhibitions and was an active art dealer specializing in painting, sculpture, and drawings from the 16th century to the present. In 2017, Frances started her own art dealership and advisory firm Adler Beatty with her son Alexander Adler. Frances is also Managing Director of The Ray Johnson Estate and was the Co-Executive Producer of the internationally acclaimed film on Ray Johnson, How to Draw a Bunny (2002).

Laura Kugel, Galerie Kugel, TEFAF Board of Trustees Member

Laura Kugel represents the sixth generation of the long-established Galerie Kugel, leader in pre-20th century art. Presenting works spanning from Antiquity to the 19th century, the gallery is renowned for its uniquely wide range of specialties. They are currently exhibiting at Villa Albertine in New York.
