TEFAF LEADS THE MARKET IN DRIVE FOR TRANSPARENCY
TEFAF Maastricht, which has run for 32 years, took steps in 2018 to refine the Fair. This was done through adjustments to the floor plan, the creation of two preview days, and the continuation of a high-level focus on the organisation’s world leading vetting standards. The result of the changes were that private and institutional buyers had the best possible environment, in which to view the highest quality works available on the market from the world’s dealers specialising in works across 7,000 years of art history across a wide range of disciplines. TEFAF Maastricht 2018 ran from 10th – 18th March (Early Access Day 8th March; Preview Day 9th March) in the MECC, Maastricht and welcome around 68,000 visitors.
‘A large number of people worked very hard to make TEFAF Maastricht 2018 the success that it was. We took a calculated risk when the Board of Trustees, in response to feedback from our exhibitors and collectors, decided to change the arrangements for the private view but the response to the change has been overwhelmingly positive’, said Patrick van Maris, CEO of TEFAF, commenting on the changes, ‘but most of all I would like to acknowledge the enormous effort that our exhibitor community made in their choice and presentation of objects, which once again was exceptional’.
Sales at the Fair were consistently good across all disciplines with many exhibitors reporting sales to new buyers. “The global marketplace is changing; new collectors are starting to enter the market but there are many more that need to be enticed. Today’s collectors have grown up in a risk averse environment and transparency is key to building their trust in what is perceived to be an opaque marketplace. Stringent vetting procedures are fundamental in this journey and as an organization we shall continue to work with leading experts from around the world to strengthen our procedures to ensure collectors feel secure in buying art at TEFAF Fairs. We believe that by embracing transparency and promoting the highest standards, TEFAF is in prime position to expand the marketplace to include the next generation of buyers and imbue them with confidence to collect art,” said Nanne Dekking, Chairman of the TEFAF Board of Trustees.
“Meeting up again with our good friends and partners at TEFAF Maastricht always impresses upon me the fact that the art market is a truly global business. We share not only our passion for art, but also our dedication to and investment in excellence”, says Kai Kuklinski, CEO of AXA ART, Principal Sponsor of TEFAF Maastricht. “Therefore, I am pleased to announce that we are able to present an outstanding platform for international collectors in collaboration with TEFAF for another three years”.
AXA ART supported the Loan Exhibition at the Fair, which this year came from the Amsterdam Museum. The impressive collection of civic guard, governor and group portraits on view in the exhibition had been recently restored, with one work undergoing restoration live at the Fair on the 15th and 16th March. The exhibition provided a unique spotlight onto important works that depict notable individuals within Dutch history.
Stabilo, the stand builders, Ten Kate, the flower specialists, and Tom Postma Studio, the Fair architects are the triumvirate that create the distinctive look and feel, for which TEFAF Maastricht is renowned. The three specialist companies, meticulously plan every aspect of the architecture and presentation of the Fair each year and work together to translate it into an effortlessly elegant environment. Tom Postma worked closely with the organisation to update the floor plan, routing and balance within the Fair to improve the visitor experience.
The next edition of TEFAF Maastricht takes place from the 16th -24th March 2019 (Early Access Day 14th March; Preview Day 15th March) at the MECC, Maastricht. The second edition of TEFAF New York Spring takes place from 4th -8th May 2018 at the Park Avenue Armory, New York.
