About the Work

Guidette Carbonell explores, in her tapestries devoted to harpies, a vision that is both mythological and deeply expressive. Inspired by these hybrid creatures—half woman, half bird—her works convey a tension between beauty and strangeness.

The use of fabric is central: through her choice of materials, threads, and weaving techniques, she evokes feathers, outstretched wings, and swirling movement. Textures shift between smooth surfaces and thicker reliefs, creating a sense of vitality and vibration. Drapery and layered fabrics suggest bodies in transformation, as if shaped by invisible forces.

A striking aspect of her approach is the use and recycling of sewn fabric fragments. By assembling heterogeneous pieces—sometimes worn, reclaimed, or marked by time—she builds rich, tactile compositions. These fragments contribute to the construction of the figures and reinforce their hybrid nature. The act of stitching becomes both a formal and symbolic gesture, transforming disparate elements into a unified work where material and imagination merge, bringing these powerful and enigmatic harpies to life.
