Contemporary Dutch Art and Functional Sculpture Through the Lens of Aldo Bakker

TEFAF Meet the Experts are interactive conversations with an exhibitor to engage with the vast knowledge and incredible artworks presented at TEFAF. Aldo Bakker’s philosophy when it comes to design is form over function; his practice focuses on unexpected shapes rather than following traditional methods of design. He began his career as a jewelry designer, but soon after shifted his focus on Industrial Design, captivated by the interaction between space, materials, everyday objects, and bodies. Deliberately worked, his pieces are individually nurtured until they develop into their own characters. Bakker’s RingTable series offers a story about size, the circle, and universal forms. In scaling a versatile, modulating shape from a ring, to a bracelet, to a stool, to a table, Bakker tracks the form’s voyage into varying utilities and narratives. The objects are created out of four complementary elements, which are either cast, printed, or assembled depending on the material. As such, the RingTable series presents a vision of the future by using innovative technologies to reimagine objects with new content and new uses. A visionary look towards new horizons, the series links between disciplines and influences coming from worlds far from each other.
