Overview

Study of a Male Nude by Mariano Fortuny Marsal, is an extraordinary example of the artist’s talent. The work captures the classical contrapposto pose of a young man, leaning effortlessly against a wall, with bold contrasts of light and shadow, the work exudes modernity through its simplicity and elegance. The figure’s graceful form is accentuated by subtle highlights of the back muscles and legs, achieved through careful reworking and erasure of lines. Resembling the artist’s male nude studies from the 1860s, this drawing is a testament to Fortuny’s ability to breathe life into classical forms, making the old feel startlingly new.
