Explore Ettore Sottsass’ captivating blown and hand finished glass works with Friedman Benda
Overview
Ettore Sottsass’s exploration of glass began in 1974, catalyzed by a request from artist Luciano Vistosi, and evolved through his work in Murano and at the CIRVA in Marseille. For over three decades, Sottsass redefined glassmaking by pushing its traditional boundaries, transforming both its techniques and the conceptual possibilities. Amongst the highlight of his glass oeuvres is Xiangzheng (1999), a rare work from a series that references Chinese calligraphy and the artist’s lifelong immersion in global cultures. As the designer himself stated, “From the soft comes the fragile, from the fire comes the color, from the glow comes the transparency—what do I know, it’s all very strange,” highlighting Sottsass’ spontaneity and continuous research, significant elements of his work.
