Seeking the Sentiment of Home: The Smithsonian Design Triennial
On the making of this year’s Smithsonian Design Triennial, examine the evolving meaning of home as part of our shared cultural history

Overview
As the Cooper Hewitt hosts its seventh Smithonian Design Triennial “Making Home,” Christina L. De León, acting deputy director of curatorial at the Cooper Hewitt, discusses collecting design as an institution and how the everyday objects we live with are deemed significant for a museum collection.
This conversation explores how an exhibition about present-day design is curated and what makes an object worthy of inclusion, why the theme of “home” seems so relevant today, and how our homes are shaped by design around us just as much as we shape design works. De Léon dives into how our present-day activities are translated into a version of history and what it is that curators are hoping to capture when they shape a collection of design.
