Chinese porcelain and cross-cultural works of art

Jorge Welsh Works of Art was founded by Jorge Welsh and Luísa Vinhais. The gallery’s expertise is in Chinese porcelain - with an emphasis on export porcelain - and cross-cultural works of art from Africa, India, China, and Japan ranging from the 15th to the 19th century.

Jorge Welsh Works of Art sources works of art for collectors and museums worldwide and regularly lends their works to temporary exhibitions. The gallery has expanded over the past 35 years to include locations in London and Lisbon and, through the years, Jorge Welsh Works of Art has exhibited at reputed art fairs and events such as TEFAF Maastricht, TEFAF New York, Biennale des Antiquaires in Paris, Bienal de Antiguidades in Lisbon, Asian Art in London and Fine Art Asia in Hong Kong.

Building on the gallery's in-house research team and independent international scholars, Jorge Welsh Works of Art has established a reputation for its lifelong commitment to furthering knowledge in its area of expertise. Through partnerships with institutions across Europe, the USA, and Asia, Jorge Welsh Works of Art sponsors the conservation and research of museum objects and collections, and awards scholarships to graduate students pursuing degrees in the history of cross-cultural art.

Since 1999, the gallery's editorial department, Jorge Welsh Research & Publishing, has published over 40 scholarly catalogues and books, many of which have become sought-after reference works in the field. Highlights include 'European Decoration on Oriental Porcelain' by Helen Espir, 'Chinese Armorial Porcelain for Spain' by Rocío Diaz, 'Tankards and Mugs: Drinking from Chinese Export Porcelain' by Rose Kerr and Maria Antónia Pinto de Matos, and the five volumes of 'The RA Collection of Chinese Ceramics: a Collector's Vision'. Many of these have been translated to Chinese, Spanish, and Portuguese.

Jorge Welsh and Luísa Vinhais regularly curate temporary exhibitions including those at both our galleries and at international museums and foundations.
