Founded in 1889, De Wit Fine Tapestries is an international leading company in trading fine tapestries. Its fourth and fifth generation of entrepreneurs are leading a team of twenty specialized art historians and tapestry restorers. They are driven by the search for tapestries of the finest quality, rareness and provenance.
The company is established in the Refuge of the abbey of Tongerlo (1484) in Mechelen where a collection of tapestries from the beginning of the 15th century until today is exhibited and open to the public.
De Wit counts among its clients some of the greatest museums worldwide such as the Louvre Museum in Paris, the Victoria and Albert Museum in London, the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam, the Royal Museums of Art and History in Brussels, the Mobilier National-Manufacture des Gobelins in Paris, the Art Institute of Chicago, the Cleveland Museum of Art, and others.
De Wit a is also very well known for successfully organizing international tapestry exhibitions such as “Golden weavings” in cooperation with the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam, and the Bayerisches Nationalmuseum in Munich (90.000 visitors), and “Los Honores”, in cooperation with Patrimonio Nacional in Madrid (93.000 visitors).
