About the Work

Joan Miró, the master of playful chaos, shows his fantastic side again here: A human face? A vase? An enigmatic glimpse into another dimension?

The title Signes et figurations (Signs and Figures) doesn't give anything away either, but only describes what Miró enchants us with: he juggles with symbols, lines and shapes that hover weightlessly between the world of dreams and childlike painting — experimental, intuitive and yet carefully considered.

Our work dates from 1935, a politically charged time, shortly before the outbreak of the Spanish Civil War — in which Miró broke with painterly conventions, experimented with unusual techniques and materials and further developed his own unmistakable artistic language.
