About the Work

Leaves (1987-88) perfectly balances the traditional notion that art should stir emotions and reveal other worlds, with a more modern awareness of the medium’s limitations and a concern for the process itself. On the one hand Hodgkin uses expressive gestures to create a sense of place - the arch of varying greens set upon layers of red bring to mind a lush, tropical garden and the jewel like colours are reminiscent of his paintings inspired by India. While on the other hand, Hodgkin goes out of his way to make the viewer aware of the deceptiveness of the scene.

The artifice is enhanced by his decision to paint directly onto wood and over the frame, thereby using the roughness of the boards themselves to emphasise the painting’s essential nature as a material object.
