About the Work

Executed in 1986, this portrait compresses the human figure into a condensed, vertical stack of jagged features and symbols. With its bold red and blue contours and a scrawled “38th St.” inscription, the drawing distills Condo’s New York experiences into raw visual code. The work encapsulates his early mastery of drawing as an autonomous form—merging painterly color with graphic immediacy to create what he has called “an imaginary realism.”.
