About the Work

The present sideboard is a one-of-a-kind piece designed by Josef Frank and produced by Svenskt Tenn in 1960–61 for an apartment on Strandvägen in central Stockholm. While unique in execution, it shares many of the defining features of model 2170. The leg structure, proportions and compositional clarity clearly relate to the earlier design, though the format has been extended horizontally to function as a sideboard.

The walnut veneer across the façade and top is carefully book-matched, allowing the natural figuring of the wood to form a continuous surface.

Provenance

Frank was commissioned to create a number of unique pieces of furniture during his career. One such example is this sideboard that was designed for an apartment on Strandvägen, in central Stockholm. It was made by Svenskt Tenn in 1960-61. The overall design, especially that of the legs, was inspired by the chest of drawers, model 2170, designed by Josef Frank in 1954.
