About the Work

"Rêverie" exemplifies Chagall’s poetic, dreamlike style. Fantasy and reality blend in a symphony of color as the artist transforms a traditional still life into a scene brimming with memory and dream, populating the composition with figures and objects that repeat throughout his career: a goat, a shepherd, a bouquet of flowers, a vase, a pair of embracing lovers, a village, and a fiddler who levitates upside down. Chagall painted this watercolor in 1971 at his studio, La Colline, in Saint-Paul-de-Vence, France.

He sold it two years later to the famous art dealer, Pierre Matisse, who quickly sold it; it has remained with one family since 1974.
