About the Work

Park Daesung (b. 1945, pen name Sosan) has developed a distinctive painterly language that extends the tradition of Korean ink painting into a contemporary context. Rooted in the lineage the pedigree of Silkyeong (actual view) and scape painting, his work translates calligraphic brushwork into bold, semi-abstract compositions, where individual strokes generate both structural tension and spatial dynamism.

Guryeong Waterfall (2026) exemplifies this approach. Depicting one of Korea’s most renowned waterfalls at Mount Kumgang, a subject the artist has revisited since 1998, the work is structured around a vertical composition framed by monumental rock formations. The dense, forceful strokes of the cliffs sharply contrast with the restrained, diluted ink of the centrally descending waterfall, activating the surrounding negative space. This interplay between solidity and void heightens the visual tension while amplifying the sense of scale and movement within the composition.
