About the Work

Maria Pergay's 21st century body of work represented a new chapter in her continual experimentation with materials. The collection, which includes a mirrored pair of Drape Cabinets, explored combinations and juxtapositions of stainless steel, bronze, wood and mother of pearl, each an element of wonder and refinement. Establishing unusual pairings, Pergay encouraged these materials to function harmoniously. In so doing, she achieved a delicate balance and unexpected beauty; her materials are commanding yet elegant, historically grounded yet absolutely contemporary in application.

Pergay's choices of materials encapsulate her distinct taste, developed over a lifetime, for things at once traditional and modern. The Drape Cabinets in particular display hints of the surreal - each door seemingly held in place by a safety pin.
