Overview

Amedeo Modigliani’s (1884–1920) Femme nue s’appuyant sur l'avant-bras gauche [Nude Woman Leaning on Left Forearm] from circa 1910 anticipates the famous nudes that the artist would paint only a few years later, predicting most of their exemplary characteristics: the almond-shaped eyes; the liberal exaggeration of certain volumes; an impression of tranquility and sensuality, one deprived of obscenity. It also demonstrates the diversity of approaches through which Modigliani would reinterpret an ideal of feminine beauty via his own sensibility, as well as his admiration for the work of Cézanne, the geometric rigor of Cubism, and non-European art.

This drawing was purchased, as part of a series originally from Modigliani’s notebook, directly from the artist by Dr. Paul Alexandre, friend and patron to the artist, and has remained in the family until now, as it is presented during TEFAF Maastricht 2023 for the first time.
