From Private Collection to Public Mission: Christian Levett in Conversation
Christian Levett reflects on how private collecting can evolve into a public mission, drawing on his experience as the founder of FAMM
Overview
Since 2024, TEFAF, in partnership with AXA XL, has presented an editorial and programming series dedicated to collecting. In 2026, the series focuses on private collecting with a mission for public access, examining how collectors share their works with broader audiences through initiatives such as loans, foundations, and the establishment of private museums.
In this conversation, Christian Levett, founder of FAMM, reflects on his journey from private collector to institution-builder. With a collection of nearly 2,000 works spanning art and history, he has developed a distinctive approach that brings historical objects into dialogue with contemporary perspectives, while also contributing to the recognition of female artists. Through this vision, Levett has created a museum that recontextualizes art for new audiences while remaining firmly rooted in scholarship.
