This captivating work depicts a moment of regal diplomacy set against the enchanting backdrop of Venice’s iconic Piazza San Marco at night. The Piazza San Marco by Night with Victor Emmanuel II and Franz Joseph I (1875), immortalizes the grandiose occasion when two of Europe’s most powerful monarchs, Victor Emmanuel II and Franz Joseph I, made their public appearance to an eager Venetian crowd. With a storied provenance, this painting passed through generations of the Savoy family, ultimately descending to HRH Princess Pia of Savoy in Switzerland until 2024, preserving its historical significance.
