Hiroshi Sugimoto: Capturing Traces of Time
Discover the poetic and conceptual depth of Hiroshi Sugimoto’s photographic practice
Overview
Internationally acclaimed artist Hiroshi Sugimoto has spent decades exploring the nature of time, perception, and memory through a distinctive photographic language that merges conceptual rigor with classical beauty. Working with long exposures and precise compositions, he transforms subjects such as seascapes, theaters, and architectural landmarks into meditations on duration and stillness, collapsing past and present into a single, contemplative image.
In Staircase, Villa Farnese I (triptych), from the Viaggio in Italia series, Sugimoto engages directly with the legacy of art history, reinterpreting iconic sites through a lens that is both analytical and poetic. Bridging photography, sculpture, and installation, his work draws on both Western modernism and Japanese aesthetics, offering a profound reflection on how we see, remember, and experience the world. This session provides a focused introduction to his practice, highlighting the ideas and techniques that define his enduring contribution to contemporary art.
