Redefining Printmaking: Helen Frankenthaler’s Spring Run I
A rare monoprint by Helen Frankenthaler, redefining the expressive possibilities of printmaking.
Overview
Helen Frankenthaler’s Spring Run I (1996) offers a compelling insight into an artist who transformed the possibilities of printmaking through experimentation and intuition. In this unique monoprint - combining monotype, lithography and hand coloring - Frankenthaler treated the printing process as a space for discovery, allowing color, movement and chance to shape the final work. Created during her long-standing collaboration with master printer Kenneth Tyler in New York, Spring Run I reflects the same sense of freedom and painterly energy that define her paintings and reveals how Frankenthaler transformed the technical stages of printmaking into expressive works in their own right.
