The Statement Jewels and Artistry of Didier Ltd. & Hemmerle

TEFAF Meet the Experts are interactive conversations with an exhibitor to engage with the vast knowledge and incredible artworks presented at TEFAF.   This year marks a return to celebrating, gathering, and learning together in person. Together with TEFAF, we invite you to discover jewelry up close—to touch, experience and hear its stories upon the fair's return to the Park Avenue Armory. In a special gathering in the jewel-like Veteran's room, the audience will have an intimate chance to hear from Didier & Martine Haspalaugh and Christian & Yasmin Hemmerle. Each will present the audience with a special statement jewel that holds a hidden story. Together we explore unique provenances, novel design methods, unexpected materials, and perhaps even a secret mechanism.

Christian Hemmerle, Hemmerle

[Hemmerle] (https://hemmerle.com) is a fourth-generation family run jeweller at the vanguard of contemporary design. Founded in 1893 in Munich, Germany, it is considered one of the world’s most inventive jewellers and remains renowned for its one-of-a-kind works characterised by innovative material combinations and a dedication to craftsmanship and quality. Each jewel conceived is handcrafted and layered with cultural references and is as original as a work of art. Today, Christian and Yasmin Hemmerle run the business, with the continued support of Stefan and Sylveli Hemmerle. Hemmerle’s jewellery has been exhibited in museums around the world and can be found in the permanent collections of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, the Victoria and Albert Museum, London, and the Cooper Hewitt Smithsonian Design Museum, New York.

Martine & Didier Haspeslagh, Didier Ltd.

[Didier Ltd] (https://www.didierltd.com), founded by Didier and Martine Haspeslagh, occupies a special niche amongst art and design galleries by specializing in jewels created by modern artists, which have been acquired from the secondary art market. With the benefit of hindsight, the gallery is able to present the finest examples of an artist’s work, where the artistry, design and craftsmanship of the jewel is paramount over its intrinsic value. These jewels range from the most intimate expressions of their art, made as private gifts for their loved ones, to pieces created in editions, as a way to disseminate their art to the widest possible public outside the confines of a museum or art gallery. Jewelry by artists is a growing collecting field with museums starting to exhibit jewels alongside other works of art. Didier Ltd has been very active in loaning jewels to these exhibitions as well as promoting the subject at international art and design fairs and through its gallery catalogs.
