About the Work

Robert Mangold’s Column Painting series embodies a refined economy of form, rich with interwoven relationships. By shifting the traditional horizontal orientation of painting to the vertical, Mangold evokes architectural elements where simplicity masks a considered conceptual framework.

His delicate pencil lines layered over translucent washes of color, create undulating rhythms that hint at kinetic movement—almost like a visual echo of a sound wave. These hand-drawn curves and underlying grids are essential to his work, providing a structured foundation. The grids act as both a subtext and an organizing principle, grounding the compositions while countering the illusionistic nature of the curves.

Mangold’s paintings strike a balance between the precision of geometric structure and the lyrical beauty of his curves and color. Their rigorously conceived forms reveal the method of their making, where process and composition remain in constant dialogue.
