About the Work

Alexander Calder initially began his artistic journey as a painter but didn’t explore gouache as a medium until a yearlong stay in Aix-en-Provence, France, in 1953, when he was in his mid-sixties. From that point forward, he continued to create works on paper alongside his sculptural practice. This more immediate medium allowed Calder to effortlessly translate the bold, vivid language of his sculptures into two dimensions.

Working with speed and spontaneity, he employed dynamic lines and planes of his signature primary colors to convey geometric patterns, natural motifs, and metaphysical themes that inspired him.
