About the Work

One of the four etched self-portraits dating from the year 1630 in which the artist uses his own face to produce studies of the various emotions.

Excellent, richly contrasting early impression from the rare 2nd state, prior to the removal of the two horizontal lines. Printed with a delicate plate tone that fills the untreated background with space-generating atmosphere. The face, in contrast, has been wiped quite clean to great effect, so that light-dark contrasts emerge clearly, supporting the dramatism of the facial expression, designed to expresses vexation, in the most beautiful way.
