About the Work

This etching is the only self-portrait by Degas in the print medium. Like many artists of the 19th century, Degas was greatly inspired by Rembrandt and the master's influence greatly informed Degas' expressive use of light and shadow in this portrait.

This is an exceptionally rich impression of the third state, the only comparable impression we are aware of is in the Institut National d’Histoire de l’Art, Paris.
