About the Work

Marion Verboom’s works embody some of the most recent developments in contemporary sculpture, while remaining firmly rooted in history. They are striking for their diversity of materials, shapes, and colours, and can be interpreted on several levels. Verboom’s sculpture is often associated with the notion of hybridisation, as she brings together seemingly distant or opposing elements to create new forms. There are numerous references to history, both personal and collective, as well as to the history of art.

Artistic gesture and technical experimentation lie are central to her practice: porcelain is sometimes enamelled, sometimes matt, and contrasts with crystal. Chef depicts a figure whose head is crowned with a mauve crystal. This hybrid character, combining the human, the spiritual, and a precious material, reinterprets medieval codes through a contemporary lens.

Presented at the Cluny Museum in the exhibition Convoquer les chimères, the work engages directly with medieval imagery. Marion Verboom has exhibited widely in France and internationally, including solo exhibitions at La Verrière – Fondation Hermès in Brussels, invited at the Max Ernest Museum on Germany for the anniversary of the museum and has taken part in numerous group exhibitions.
