About the Work

Alan Sonfist’s Rock Monument of New York City (1971) stands as a profound testament to the hidden strata that form the foundation of Manhattan’s iconic skyline. As part of his celebrated Earth Monuments series, this work unveils a cross-section of the ancient bedrock lying 30 meters beneath the city’s bustling streets.

Sonfist’s approach blends science with art, carving through Manhattan’s subsoil from the financial hub of Wall Street to the northern reaches near 122nd Street. This creates a visual portrayal of New York City’s geological horizon, where the stone’s colors gradually lighten as they progress northward, resembling the delicate gradient of a painter’s stroke.

Rock Monument of New York City transcends mere representation; it seeks to make the invisible visible. Beneath the concrete and steel of modernity, beneath the ceaseless hum of urban life, Sonfist’s artwork exposes the primordial bedrock that has quietly supported the island for ages.

Works from this series have found a permanent home in some of the most prestigious art institutions, including the Museum of Modern Art in New York, the Museum of Contemporary Art in Chicago, the Dallas Museum of Fine Arts, and the Albright-Knox Art Gallery.
