About the Work

Lyon-born Antoine Vollon (1833-1900) was one of the most admired realist painters of his time, alongside Jean-Baptiste Carpeaux and Théodule Ribot. His Salon submissions, his landscapes, and especially his still lifes – often compared to those of Jean Siméon Chardin – earned him a remarkable reputation during his lifetime. Yet despite this success, Vollon is today a somewhat forgotten figure, overshadowed by the great names of the 19th century.

Our Portrait of a Woman, rendered with striking contrasts of light and shadow, reveals a rather intimate side of Vollon’s artistic practice that attests both to the artist's draughtsmanship and to his interest in the expressive potential of the human figure in the nude.
