About the Work

Zhai-Liza (angel), created by Hans Op de Beeck, portrays a small, delicate girl seated on a low bench, her chin resting on her right hand as she gazes ahead with a melancholic, listless expression. Two small angel wings adorn her back, and a magic wand rests in her left hand. It appears she is momentarily resisting her fairytale role, her cheerfulness entirely absent.

Known for his evocative sculptures, films, and immersive installations, Op de Beeck often stages figures in muted, grey-toned worlds that reflect on themes of melancholy, transience, and the quiet emotional undercurrents of everyday life. In this work, he subtly subverts innocence and fantasy, presenting childhood not as carefree but as introspective and emotionally complex.
