About the Work

"Il Trovatore" is a remarkable example of Giorgio de Chirico's "Mannequins" series, in which the artist depicted blank-faced articulated figures in his signature still, classical setting. Part of the artist's core Metaphysical subjects, the "Trovatore" – or "finder" – is part of a set of philosophical characters that de Chirico deploys across some of his most sought-after works. With no eyes or mouth, they belong to the classical tradition of blind seers and wise men, including Homer, Tiresias and Oedipus.

As de Chirico himself wrote: "there are cases and moments when we can truly be philosophers (I am also adding: poets and painters) only by remaining silent."
