About the Work

Nicknamed "the painter of silence", La Cour sought out quiet and secluded places where he could experience more untouched nature; he frequented the Tivoli region assiduously during his many stays in Italy. The most enchanting place in Tivoli is the famous Villa d'Este, built for

Cardinal Hippolyte d'Este (1509–1572) by the architect Pirro Ligorio (1513–1583) in the 1570s. Working on the motif, La Cour has placed itself in the centre of the garden, on the main axis that starts from the villa that can be seen in the background. Under the villa, we can see the spectacular Fountain of the Dragons, or Girandola, with its powerful jet of water; The painter probably settled a little further down, at the level of the Peschiere, or fish ponds.
