About the Work

[Catalogue Raisonné Nr. 94]

RELATED WORKS

This painting belongs to a series of so-called 'sous-bois' scenes, comprising seven works executed between 1894 and 1900, in which the vertical rhythm of the tree trunks takes center stage. Closely aligned with the Symbolist movement of the fin de siècle, works from this small group are widely regarded as the undisputed masterpieces of this self-taught artist. The poetic desolation of the forest, combined with a naively impressionistic gaze, establishes these paintings as a pioneering foreshadowing of modern painting in the twentieth century.
