About the Work

Born in Laval in 1844 and deceased in Paris in 1910, Henri Rousseau received no formal artistic training. In 1870, he began working at the Octroi de Paris, an administrative position that earned him the nickname “Douanier Rousseau”. Passionate about drawing, he obtained a copyist's card at the Louvre and began his career as a painter by exhibiting for the first time at the Salon des Indépendants in 1885.

With his unusual background and his knowledge of the painting of his time, this painter immediately caught the attention of his contemporaries thanks to his style, which was detached from all the dominant avant-garde movements.
