About the Work

Margot McKinney is renowned for her work with opals, and in particular the Australian outback variety – formed by an extinct inland sea which existed 100 million years ago. At the centre of her Rainforest Bloom ring we find a rare black opal of 37.52ct, mined in the arid desert environment of Lightning Ridge in remote New South Wales. Its extraordinary play-of-colour features an array of deep blues and greens in rich hues which echo its ancient geological origins beneath the waves of a vast prehistoric ocean.

The artist’s work is inspired by the wonders of the natural world, and for this piece she found her muse in one of the simplest and most beautiful of all organic creations: a tropical flower. Surrounding the central opal is a corolla of large, gently undulating ‘petals’ which capture the beauty and fragile tactility of the natural original. Painstakingly formed in 18-karat white gold, each one is finished in an intricate pavé of diamonds, blue sapphires and tsavorites.
