About the Work

This painting, on a magnificent alabaster, is a noteworthy addition to Ciro Ferri’s catalogue, of which, until now, only a single painting on stone was known.

The subject of the Virgin and Child with St. Dominic can be identified from the lily and the book, associated respectively with chastity and wisdom, and from the colour of St. Dominic’s habit.

The work belongs to the artist’s youthful oeuvre, before his time in Florence, between 1657 and 1658.
