About the Work

This painting is the artist's plein-air study and the preamble to the final painting, which was exhibited at the Salon the following year and acquired by the Musée d'Orsay in 2007. When Luce painted this cartoon, he was in Herblay, on the outskirts of Paris, at the invitation of Paul Signac, and it has been established that the two artists painted side by side for several weeks in the region at the end of the summer of 1889. The resemblance between this work and Signac's 'Herblay, brouillard', painted at the same time, is striking.
