The Ancestral Legacy and Tradition of the Hemba Lusingiti Figure
Discover a striking 19th century lusingiti figure by master artist from the Hemba tribe of the Democratic Republic of Congo. Exhibitor Bernard de Grunne will uncover ancient historical narratives and traditions, exploring the vital role of the Hemba statue
Overview
This powerful lusingiti figure, crafted to embody a benevolent spirit, was believed to carry the power to ensure the well-being of the living. His name, now forgotten, was invoked along with those of his peers with whom he formed a lineage of ancestors as a call to prosperity. Once playing a vital role in the spiritual and social life of the community, the Hemba statue honored the specific clan’s legacy. By passing on their powers to their descendants, these statues were believed to keep game abundant, people healthy, and to ensure the fertility of the women as well as that of the fields.
