Space-Time, Movement, and Matter: The Legacy of Waldemar Cordeiro
Explore Waldemar Cordeiro’s visionary work, from his role in the Ruptura movement to pioneering computer-based art, as his centenary is celebrated globally
Overview
Through a pioneering combination of theory and practice, Waldemar Cordeiro is one of Brazil’s foremost art figures of the 1950s. His work, characterized by a unique blend of sensory interplay and technological distance, as seen in The Woman that is Not B.B. (Brigitte Bardot), pushed the boundaries of art. His significant influence, first felt through his co-founding of the Ruptura movement in Brazil in 1952, continued throughout his career as he embraced the digital frontier with computer-based art. The Ruptura movement sought to advance a modern approach to creative expression through rationality, by implementing a shift towards concrete art and the use of geometric abstraction.
Featured in the 2024 Venice Biennale and celebrated in international retrospectives, Cordeiro’s centenary marks the ongoing global recognition of his revolutionary contributions to modern art.
