About the Work

The series began in 2019. These tapestries depict characters from the film holding a Cooling System within settings inspired by outsider art and architecture. This series is part of the research work conducted by Laure Prouvost for a publication edited by Pirelli Hangar Bicocca (2019), in which the artist focused on exploring utopian and fantastical architectures that lie between architecture and outsider art—frameworks in which she portrays herself with a Cooling System.

This tapestry continues the series initiated by We Will Keep Cool, as well as We Will Keep Cool (Parco Dei Mostri Di Bomarzo), We Will Keep Cool (Palais Idéal Du Facteur Cheval), and We Will Keep Cool (Eben Ezer Tower). The Minack Theatre is the famous open-air theatre in Cornwall, carved into the granite cliff and set within gardens overlooking the panorama of Porthcurno Bay. Minack means «rocky place» — meynek in Cornish. The story of the Minack Theatre begins in 1929, when Rowena Cade took part in an outdoor production of Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream. The success was such that the company repeated the experience the following year. She then wanted to stage The Tempest, another play by William Shakespeare, and proposed using her clifftop garden for the performance. This meant creating a practical space for the actors and a place for the audience to sit. Rowena was both an artist and a builder. Throughout the theatre, she carved intricate patterns into wet concrete using an old screwdriver. Many of the seats bear the names and dates of the plays performed there. Rowena continued working on her theatre until the age of 80. She passed away in 1983.
