About the Work

Paul Gauguin’s 'Bouquets et céramique sur une commode' (1886) is an early still life that brings together two central aspects of the artist’s work of the mid-1880s: floral compositions and his growing interest in ceramics. Painted in oil on canvas and signed and dated on the front, the work shows bouquets arranged alongside one of Gauguin’s own ceramic pieces, set on a simple chest of drawers.

The painting has a documented provenance that includes major European and American collections, among them those of Dr. Max Emden in Hamburg, Florence Gould in New York and the Wildenstein Collection. It has been exhibited internationally since 1949, including at the Kunstmuseum Basel, the Musée Cantonal des Beaux-Arts in Lausanne, Galerie Charpentier in Paris, the Museo de Bellas Artes in Caracas and the Albertina Museum in Vienna.

The work has been published extensively in the Gauguin literature from 1948 onward and is listed in Daniel Wildenstein’s Gauguin. Premier itinéraire d'un sauvage. Catalogue de l'oeuvre peint (1873–1888), vol. II, no. 239.
