About the Work

This hand-built ceramic vessel encapsulates Jennifer Lee’s quietly radical approach to form and surface. The asymmetrically tilted profile and softly swelling volume give the piece a poised, almost weightless presence, while the muted, pale body is animated by fine speckling and subtle “traces” of colour that appear to emerge from within the clay itself. As in all of Lee’s work, the tones are not applied as glaze but achieved by mixing metallic oxides directly into the clay, so that colour and structure are inseparable.

This unique work reflects the refined sensibility that has placed Lee among the most acclaimed figures in contemporary ceramics, with pieces in the collections of major institutions including The Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Philadelphia Museum of Art, LACMA and the Victoria & Albert Museum. The quiet complexity of Pale, speckled base, speckled traces, tilted speaks to the artist’s long engagement with prehistoric pottery, Japanese ceramic traditions and the natural landscape, resulting in a vessel that feels both ancient and decisively modern.
