About the Work

This unique ceramic vessel by Yuki Hayama exemplifies the artist’s ability to fuse the Arita porcelain tradition with a distinctly contemporary sensibility. The generous, open form provides a stage for his meticulously painted surface, where an intricate web of patterns and motifs unfolds with almost calligraphic precision. Every detail is applied freehand, directly onto the ceramic without preliminary drawing, resulting in a surface that feels both exacting and alive.

Born and trained in Arita, one of the historic centres of Japanese porcelain, Hayama draws deeply on mythology, history and natural forms, transforming them into dense visual narratives. Working with just five traditional hand-ground glazes, he creates a remarkable range of tonal variations through subtle layering, achieving dozens of nuanced colours. In this work, time-honoured technique and storytelling meet a highly personal vision, embodying both five thousand years of ceramic tradition and a singular contemporary voice.
